Fully funded UK STEM scholarships for women launched for 2026–27

The British Council has opened applications for a new round of fully funded STEM scholarships for women for the 2026–27 academic year, offering comprehensive financial support for postgraduate study at universities across the UK.

The awards are designed to remove financial barriers and increase female participation in science, technology, engineering and maths, fields where women remain under-represented globally.

What the scholarship covers

Successful applicants will receive full funding for:

  • Tuition fees
  • Living costs and accommodation
  • Return travel to the UK
  • Visa and application expenses
  • Health insurance coverage

The package aims to ensure recipients can focus entirely on their studies without financial pressure.

Who can apply

The scheme targets talented women from eligible countries who demonstrate strong academic backgrounds and a commitment to advancing STEM careers. Applicants are typically required to secure an offer from a participating UK university and show how their studies will contribute to development in their home communities.

Courses span a broad range of disciplines, including data science, engineering, climate science, health technologies and artificial intelligence.

Closing the gender gap

Despite progress in recent years, women remain under-represented in many technical and scientific professions. Organisers say the initiative is intended to address both access and confidence gaps by providing mentorship, networking and leadership development alongside academic study.

Education leaders argue that increasing women’s participation in STEM is critical not only for equality, but also for innovation and economic growth.

How to apply

Applications are now open, with candidates encouraged to review eligibility criteria and deadlines carefully. Shortlisted applicants will typically undergo interviews and academic assessment before final awards are confirmed.

Prospective students are advised to apply early, as places are limited and competition is expected to be strong.
