Nestlé Recalls SMA Infant Formula in the UK Over Potential Toxin Risk
Nestlé UK & Ireland has issued a voluntary recall of specific SMA infant and follow-on formula products sold in the UK after identifying a potential contamination risk involving the food-borne toxin cereulide.
The recall affects selected batches of powdered SMA products, including first infant milk, follow-on milk and specialist lactose-free formulas. Nestlé said the action was taken as a precautionary safety measure following internal quality checks, emphasising that no other SMA products are affected.
Cereulide is a toxin produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus and is considered particularly concerning because it is heat-stable, meaning it cannot be destroyed through boiling or standard formula preparation methods. In infants, exposure may lead to vomiting and gastrointestinal distress, making rapid identification and withdrawal of affected products critical.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has advised parents and carers not to use any recalled products and to check batch codes carefully against official guidance. Consumers are being encouraged to return affected items to the retailer or contact Nestlé directly for refunds and further support.
While the recall has been described as precautionary, incidents involving infant nutrition inevitably raise broader concerns about supply-chain oversight and ingredient sourcing. Infant formula relies on complex, often international supply networks, leaving little margin for error when products are designed for some of the most vulnerable consumers.
Voluntary recalls can demonstrate regulatory compliance and corporate responsibility, but they also underline the importance of robust quality assurance and transparency within the baby food sector.
