Students are beginning to gain digital access to exam results through the Education Record app, linked to the GOV.UK Wallet. The national pilot is designed to replace lost certificates and simplify transfers between schools, colleges and employers.
What the app will do
Pupils will still receive results through their school, but participating students can later view verified records on their phone. Schools and colleges may also access information needed to support transitions, including continued English and maths study, free-school-meal eligibility and SEND requirements.
The potential benefit
A portable record could reduce paperwork and prevent young people repeatedly proving qualifications. Government estimates suggest the system could eventually save education providers up to £30 million a year in administration.

- How is consent recorded and withdrawn?
- What route exists to correct inaccurate data?
- What happens when a student loses access to a device?
Digital convenience must not create a new barrier for young people without reliable phones, connectivity or identification. Schools should provide a clear alternative and explain how data is used in plain language.
