The cultural and political divide within the MAGA movement has reached a boiling point this January. On a widely shared segment of his podcast, Joe Rogan suggested that the Trump administration is intentionally ramping up high-profile Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations to shift the public’s attention away from the ongoing “Epstein Files” scandal.

A “Line in the Sand”

Rogan, who supported Trump in 2024 but has grown increasingly critical of the Department of Justice (DOJ) under Attorney General Pam Bondi, described the administration’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein documents as “gaslighting.” Despite the passage of the Epstein Files Transparency Act in late 2025, which mandated a full disclosure by December 19, the DOJ has currently released less than 1% of the 5.2 million documents in its possession.

“It’s classic sleight of hand,” Rogan told his audience. “Every time a new batch of flight logs or emails mentions the jet trips in the ’90s, suddenly there’s a massive raid in Minneapolis or Chicago. They want you looking at the border so you don’t look at the names in those files. It’s a line in the sand for a lot of people who actually wanted the truth.”

The Distraction Theory

The theory gained traction following a series of events in early January 2026:

  • The Missed Deadline: On January 3, the DOJ missed a critical congressional deadline to provide a written justification for withholding nearly five million pages of Epstein-related material.
  • The Minneapolis Incident: Just days later, on January 7, a major ICE operation in Minneapolis resulted in the tragic death of a U.S. citizen, Renee Nicole Good. The incident sparked the “No Kings” protests that have since mobilized millions across the country.
  • The “Roving Raids”: Following a Supreme Court ruling in favor of the administration, “roving raids” have commenced in major urban centers like Los Angeles and Chicago.

Fractures in the Base

Rogan isn’t the only one expressing skepticism. While the White House maintains that the ICE operations are part of a promised campaign to deport criminal undocumented immigrants, a recent Axios survey shows that only 40% of the public approves of current enforcement methods. Within the Republican base, a growing faction of “transparency hawks” is joining Rogan in demanding that the administration stop “deflecting” and fulfill its campaign promise to unseal the files entirely.
